The story of the Azienda Vitivinicola Tonnino began in the early 1950s, when the grandfather Paolo started an entrepreneurial business based on the production of must grapes destined to the main wine firms of Sicily. At the beginning of the Nineties Antonio, Paolo’s nephew, concluded his agro-technical studies and decided to join his grandfather, who was awarded best local farmer by the City of Alcamo, in the winery business.
In that period, the diversification of the vineyards started. This involved planting international grape varieties and reorganizing the equipment system, in conformity with the evolution of the oenological world of that time. Benefiting from his grandfather’s enormous experience, Antonio reorganized the whole productive structure, from the vineyards to the bottling, investing considerable resources in the production and in the quality consolidation, in order to satisfy the requests of a more demanding global market.
At the present time, the wine-producing potential is exalted by rigorous trimming in order to obtain more fine wines. The geographical position, the ground exposure and the soil composition, already dedicated to the vine growing for centuries, are all aspects that facilitate the work of the enologist.
The Tonnino Estates are placed in the Belice Valley, which includes the territories of Contessa Entellina, Poggioreale and Salaparuta, which are famous microzones for embodying an important and strong character in the produced wines.
